What is a J-1 visa for Work and Travel Program?

It’s a temporary non-immigrant work visa. It falls within the Cultural Exchange category. University students are allowed to work in the US from 3 months to 1 year depending on the job type.

The purpose of the visa is to give students the opportunity to learn about America while they work in seasonal jobs, and then take those impressions back to their home countries. The J-1 visa is the legal entry document into the U.S. for the participants in this program. It indicates under which status the participant is allowed to enter the U.S. The J-1 Visa allows international students to work legally for up to four months in the United States. It’s classified as a temporary non-immigrant visa.
